Metamorphosis Day 10, Juice Fast Day 3

Today was kind of amazing. As you will see, I ran into a few snags, but they ended up being fantastic experiences, and I learned something about my body as well.

Juice Fast Day 3

This juicing thing is really working for me. Seriously, my life is so busy, that eliminating food consumption from from my list of things to plan for, think about, and do frees me up to enjoy life more.   It’s as easy as: (Step 1) Go to store and buy juice (Step 2) Drink. Done.

I awakened some serious gas though, as after some green juice this morning, I had serious stomach cramping. I was at work and so desperate to relieve the gas that I actually closed my office door, and did a inversion / headstand in my J Crew wool skirt and silk blouse.  It didn’t work. So then I tried (keeping my office door closed)  laying on my stomach on the floor while working on my laptop on the floor.  That didn’t work. The stomach pain was so uncomfortable, that I decided to leave the office and finish my workday at home. I even drove with my seat reclined significantly to try to relieve the pressure.

Interestingly, that pain is something that I dealt with for years starting my teenage years. There were times where I would lay in the bed for up to six hours writhing in pain, and other times where I was dining out (at Red Robin) with friends, and I would have to leave the table to go to the car to recline to ease the pain while I waited for my friends to finish dining.

Needless to say, the doctors did not have a solution. They prescribed anti-acids and anti-depressants, neither of which I took because I knew instinctively that it would not resolve the problem. I have been able to mitigate that pain in the last five years through proper food combining and a cleaner diet.

But today I had a biology lesson which answered for me what was driving that pain all those years. It was gas. I know this because as the pain was there today, I knew instinctively to do a colonic. And Holy Colonic! What a colonic. Gas poured out followed by waste. It was definitely a productive colonic. I actually feel more gas pressure now so I know that if I wanted to, I could actually perform another colonic today, but honestly, I’d rather just to go bed.

Today’s Juices:

  • 16 ounces distilled water, grapefruit, orange, lemon with 3 tsp total of Body Ecology Diet Potent Proteins and Vitality Super Green powders
  • 1/3 gallon green juice: cucumber, celery, apple, ginger, spinach, kale, lemon, stevia
  • 1/3 gallon yummy pink juice: pineapple, lemon, cranberry, ginger
  • 2 mugs vegetable broth: parsnip, mushroom, celery, onion

Metamorphosis Day 10

I was unable to comply with my early morning wake up this morning, and since I left the office early and worked from home in the afternoon, I had the window of opportunity to get my workout in at five o’clock before picking up my kids at 6:30.  As usual, I started with Muscular Structure, followed by Rebounding. However, half way through rebounding, my DVD froze!   Ah!   After coaxing the DVD machine a bit, I took it out to find the DVD had a smudge on it.   I didn’t want to disrupt my cardio flow, so I decided to clean the rebounding DVD later and instead fit in the full 30 minutes of Cardio Dance.    Somehow today, due to the snag in the rebounding DVD and my mindset when it happened, I surprised myself and really rocked the dance cardio.

I said on an earlier post that I thought it may take me up to 30 days to complete a full 30 minutes where I really give my all to the dance for the full duration.  Nope.   I did it today.   On day ten. 🙂

I think my Playlist helped significantly. I hadn’t messed around with preparing my own playlist before, but today for the first time I put on an old playlist that is dance club type music, and that was a sheer motivator. I discovered after my divorce, (when going through that post divorce phase of rediscovering one’s own preferences), how much I missed dancing to club music. Yes, perhaps I’m a little too reminiscent of my twenties, but hey! I love what I love, and it really gets me moving!

Wowzer (did I just really type that word?) I sweat and sweat and sweat like crazy. The room was almost 80 degrees so in additon to the playlist that helped I’m sure.   But seriously. . . . . (Ew gross, I know) but I was soaking, dripping, and even sometimes splashing sweat.

Sidebar: I never in a million years imagined that I would be blogging about an amazing day due to a productive colon irrigation and some serious sweat.

Anyway, I felt amazing today having done all this and discovering new things about my body.

Metamorphosis Day 8, Juice Fast Day 1

Juice Fast Day 1

I have been mentally preparing myself for this day for the last two months. I intentionally planned the start day to be one week after my new workout routine so that I would not be overwhelmed. In the last few days, I considered pushing the start date out, as new challenges in my personal life suddenly arose. But the morning came today, I checked in with myself, and I knew I had it in me to commit. Today. As planned.

Four days ago I learned that my dad was admitted to the hospital. He has stage four prostate cancer that as of last year had spread to his vertebra as small legions in the bone. We learned in the last few days that it has since eaten away at two vertebra, and he is now undergoing surgery on his back to fuse disintegrated vertebra to whole vertebra. The cancer is also in his ribs, his pelvis, his lymph, and potentially other organs of the body as well. I can go on and list the other symptoms and issues that have arisen, but that’s not the point of this post.

The point is that he is in my prayers, and therefore, I have decided to dedicate this 40 day juice fast to him.

Today I consumed:

1/2 cup coffee (NOT ideal, NOT recommended, but I needed this crutch for today)
Chinese herbal tea to end this cough/cold I’ve had
20 oz cucumber, celery, spinach kale juice
40 oz distilled water, grapefruit, orange juice
Lots of herbal tea

Metamorphosis Day 8

Today’s workout was different in the fact that I did it in the late afternoon versus early in the morning. The reason for this is that last night I was awake much of the night with my cough. In the wee hours of the morning, I finally took a sleep aide so that I could have some rest under my belt to face the day with, but that also meant that the 5:00 wake up was a no go.

That’s okay, I made up for this detour with a change in plans to my day. I left work about an hour early, and got my workout in at home before picking up my kids from school at 6:30.

Metamorphosis Day 5

I want to order this book called “Sweat Your Prayers”, and bring what I read in that book into the way that I am approaching these workouts.  I think that we can approach anything that we do, at any moment of the day, and offer up our action as a prayer or a service of devotion.

I’m approaching each of these DVD routines the same way.   This is especially true on the rebounder.  I have found that if my mind starts to wander and chatter on extranious thoughts, I am more prone to loose my physical balance with the the many kinds of kicks and foot movements that I am doing while jumping up and down.

By turning the chatterbox of my mind off, and just having my mind’s awareness flowing with my physical  movements, I find that I am better able to both keep my physical balance and enter into a space of grace, playfullness, fun, and gratitude while I am doing it.  Like a prayer.

I have been fighting a virus all week that has not let up.   This morning was no exception.   While I do have a cough and cold symptoms, I don’t have a fever, so I am continute to plug along.   Despite that, my body is getting used to being awake and up at 5:00.   Weird.   I never thought that would happen!    I had to be at work early today for a meeting, so I skipped the cardio dance DVD, and kept the workout to an hour total.

Metamorphosis Day 4

I am finally starting to get used to the Metamorphosis Dance Cardio DVD.   The familiarity feels good.

I had previously attempted to start the program about five months ago, but had to stop after two days.   At that time, I really gave the workout my all, but I ended up feeling like shin splints were coming on.  I was to the point where after the first two days where people who saw me walking in the office at work exclaimed, “what happened to you!”.  I informed them that I merely had completed day two of a new workout routine.   And then I aborted the program.

I have since learned though that during that false start to the program, I did not have the right approach.   I did many things wrong.  I started with the dance cardio DVD first before doing muscular structure or rebounding, I did not ensure that my body was warmed and stretched prior to starting, I did not ensure that the room was warm, and I did the cardio dance without proper foot support (either barefoot on carpet or in my Vibram shoes).   And, in the dance cardio, I used a heavy foot.

This time around, I changed my approach, and have completed the first four days, and I can walk around the office at work just fine with no undue concern from my colleagues.   🙂    I am warming up the room, using Mizuno Inspire shoes, doing the dance cardio DVD last, and trying to “step tap” when I dance, rather than jump.   What I have found by trying to “step tap” is that I’m actually AM jumping, but am just really really light on my feet.  This approach works!

Completing the full 30 minutes of TAM dance cardio DVD is no small feat.  It creates more sweat and increases the heart rate more than rebounding, so starting out right now, I am taking a breathing break about every five minutes, and I am okay with that.   During my breathing breaks, I am staying connected to my body, and walking around, keeping the flow.

Metamorphosis Day 3

I am really enjoying the Tracy Anderson Metamorphosis program.

She does alot of kicks and moves during the routine, and at first that can be hard to follow.  I have done the rebounding DVD several times before, so I have some familiarity with it coming into this 90 day program, but now that I am doing it regularly, I am more familiar with the moves, so I can just flow.  This makes it so much fun.

I am using my Jumpsport rebounder which has bungey cords as opposed to springs.   Most people love the way it feels as opposed to spring coil rebounders, but the drawback people sometimes sight is that with bungeys, it is harder to get quick precise controlled jumps.   Tracy in the DVD uses a spring coil rebounder, but by familiarizing myself with her moves, routine, and tempo, I have found that I can get quick precise jumps in on the bungy rebounder just fine, and I don’t have to put up with the “jarring” feeling that a spring coil rebounder can produce.

I intended to get through the whole 30 minutes of dance cardio, but I am balacing out my tenatious desire with the practicalities of avoiding injury.   I anticipate that it will take me up to a month before I can do the full 30 minutes of dance cardio, giving it my all, without experiencing shin pain.   So, today after 15 minutes, I listened to my body (legs), and stopped.

Interestingly though, today my heart rate was higher than yesterday during rebouding and lower during dance cardio.  I also sweat more during rebounding today.   I think that I am getting so used the rebounding routine that I can completely flow and also consitently bang through it, and I think that is intensifying the workout.

I’m feeling better, like I am adusting to this new routine.   My waist already feels more toned, so that’s encouraging!

Metamorphosis Day 2

I got a late start this morning.  The alarm went off at 4:45, but I didn’t get out of bed until 5:30.  I was so tired and I am fighting a virus, and this was the soonest I could get out of bed due to the way I was feeling.  I immediately created a mitigation plan though, so that I could still attain my goal for the day.

Because I was starting 45 minutes behind schedule, and still had to get myself and the kids out of the house by 7:30 a.m., I skipped the muscular structure DVD, saving it until the evening, and instead started with the rebounding DVD followed by the cardio dance DVD.  This allowed me to get in one hour of cardio (as cardio is the priority if one must choose), and I had free time to do muscular structure in the evening afterwork.    Disaster averted.

One of my excuses around exercise has been the demands of my kids.   Mostly, I am at home alone with them, and things like sibling quarrels, banging into furniture followed by tears, hungry stomachs, etc, can interrupt my focus and routine.

In Tracy Andersons’ book, 30 Day Method, she addresses that dynamic and really encourages moms to make that time sacred, and uninterrupted.   This mindset falls in line with the theme of “self love”.   By putting myself first for 1 to 1 1/2 hours per day, I am loving myself first during that dedicated hour, so that I have more to give to the people in my life the rest of the day.

It just so happens that at 5:45 this morning, when I was 15 minutes into my workout, my four year old son came wandering downstairs.   He sat on the couch, mesmerized by the rebound routine on TV, and things went along just fine.   He did ask for a popsicle, and I did compy (during a needed bread during dance cardio), so all went well.   He even asked me to move aside because “he couldn’t see the TV”.   I did moved slightly, but kept my space.  🙂

I feel sore, but much less foggy and exhausted than yesterday.  I feel more clear today.

In light of Mother’s Day this week, and getting workouts in with little munchkins running around, here is a great little clip of Tracy Anderson’s sister working out at home with her two year old son.

Metamorphosis Day 1

This morning I woke up at 4:47 a.m. when my alarm went off.  I just remembering wondering why I was hearing that noise at that hour.  There was about a minute where I just laid in bed considering aborting my plans for the morning work out.  But I have come to the realization that 5:00 a.m. LITERALLY is the only time I can fit it into my day.  I am committed to this process, so I actually rolled out of bed, and got started!  Yay me!

I feel proud of the fact that I have figured out a workout time that works, that I can stick to.  I tried 4:30 a.m. (too early), 6:00 a.m. (too late), 4:00 p.m. (too busy).  5:00 allows me time to work out for 1.5 hours before I get my kids up at 6:30 and get us all out of the house on time to start our days.

I also feel proud of the fact that I finally figured out how to set up my workout space.  After about a year of considering the garage, the basement, the office, the dining room, the formal living room, just yesterday, I settled on the TV/family room, and it worked out great.   I just went through a remodel of the first floor.   So lucky me: I have hard wood floors and sofas with pads on the feet.   This makes it easy to move the furniture around.   I also have a nice corner in the room to store my rebounder.    Finally, the family TV console at 5:00 a.m. is well positioned and not used by my little muchkins – so this space works!

So, this morning as planned, at 5:00 a.m., I laced up my new Mizuno Inspire tennis shoes and started with the Tracy Anderson 30 minute Muscular Structure DVD (from the Metamorphosis Series).   Then I did 30 minutes of Tracy Andersons rebounding DVD on my mini-trampoline (so much fun!), followed by half of the 30 minute Metamorphosis dance cardio DVD.   I was a little behind schedule, as this was my first time moving the furniture around, setting up the DVDs, etc, so I allowed myself some slack and “only” did 30 minutes of dance cardio.

In total though, I got in a solid 75 minute workout, 45 minutes of that being cardio.

I know going into this that I will be sore, and I may feel sort of “flu-like” for the first 30 days.   Today was like that.  I was mostly foggy in the head and felt very tired.   I just know that I will have to pull through these next several days feeling like that.  But I know that on the other side I will have much more energy and clarity – so I’m doing it!
